FAQs for Wind Direction Indicator

What is a wind direction indicator and how does it work?

A wind direction indicator is an instrument that shows the direction from which the wind is blowing. Comptus wind direction instruments use a potentiometric vane and translator to provide precise angular data in real time.

What makes the Comptus A70-D wind direction instrument different from standard wind vanes?

Unlike simple visual vanes, the A70-D offers ±4° accuracy, electronic output signals (4–20 mA, 0–10 V), and rugged NEMA enclosures for reliable industrial integration.

Where are wind direction indicators commonly used?

They are widely used in environmental monitoring, wind farm yaw control, industrial HVAC, building automation, and safety/emission monitoring systems.

How accurate is the Comptus wind direction indicator?

The A70-D wind direction instrument provides accuracy within ±4° with a dead band under 5°, making it more precise than traditional 8-point or 16-point indicators

What output signals are available for the Comptus wind direction instrument?

Available outputs include 4–20 mA current loops and voltage ranges of 0–1 V, 0–5 V, and 0–10 V, making it compatible with most data loggers and control systems.

How do I install a wind direction instrument for best results?

For accurate readings, install the sensor at least 10 meters above ground, away from obstructions that may cause turbulence, and ensure proper calibration.

What maintenance does a wind direction indicator require?

Regular maintenance includes cleaning the vane, checking bearings and wiring, and recalibrating after extreme weather to ensure continued accuracy.

What industries benefit the most from wind direction instruments?

Industries such as renewable energy, HVAC, manufacturing, agriculture, and environmental monitoring rely heavily on wind direction indicators for safety and efficiency.

Can Comptus wind direction instruments withstand harsh weather?

Yes, with NEMA 4X/IP66 enclosures, they are designed to resist rain, snow, ice, dust, and corrosion, ensuring long-term outdoor reliability.

How long do Comptus wind direction indicators last?

The potentiometric vane has a lifespan of approximately 50 million rotations, offering many years of dependable operation in continuous-use applications.
